Stop Being Surprised It's Raining in Glasgow

Parents in Glasgow face many adversaries, but there are two that we can help with: the weather and access to safe green spaces.

If you're waiting for the ‘perfect’ weather to go outside, you'll probably spend most of the year indoors.

Unfortunately, being a grown-up means making choices you'd rather not make. Deciding what's for dinner every single day. Going outside when it's dreich. Watching the same film for the sixth time this week (this one isn’t actually a choice).

We get it.

And we also know that some days you wake up, look out the window and genuinely question whether moving somewhere with a little more sun might be possible. Australia? Spain? Cornwall?

Because every Glaswegian does.

Outdoor Play in Scottish Weather: The Rain Can Be a Hero or a Villian

As a small outdoor business, you might think rain is our arch-nemesis.

It doesn't really matter that we love and enjoy a rainy day, we rely on other adults doing the same during the rainier months, and we know that isn't always easy.

So let us convince you a little.

Rain doesn't ruin a day at the Playbarn.

It just changes it.

And if you come prepared, we promise your little one will be grateful for the opportunity to splash in puddles, get muddy and build sandcastles in the rain (surprisingly, a very popular one). In fact, in our experience, the children LOVE a rainy play session. What’s a mud kitchen without mud?

It's Good for Everyone

Outdoor time and physical activity supports children's mental and emotional wellbeing, and city life needs a sanctuary that’s completely removed from the demands of stimulation of everyday life.

Rather than being cooped up inside when the sun isn’t shining, the simplest solution is shoes on, coat on, out the door!

Of course, we also understand that the Scottish weather fairy occasionally takes things a little too far.

Which is why the Playbarn gives you the best of both worlds.

We A Roof and 4 Walls

Our dutch barn is the perfect retreat for when the weather it too warm or too cold. We’ll be realistic, you’re going to need a good coat and gloves in the winter, but we have plenty of blankets and hot drinks to help. And let’s be honest, usually you’re too busy chasing a toddler to feel the cold too much.

At Dumbreck Outdoor Playbarn, children have the freedom to explore our outdoor space, while grown-ups have somewhere warm and welcoming to retreat when needed.

There are only so many parks and forests you can visit before they're looking for something a little more exciting, and you're looking for somewhere with a roof and a cup of tea

Sunny days? Outside. Crisp autumn mornings? Outside. A light drizzle? Probably still outside.

Absolutely torrential rain? Okay, that's what the barn is for. And if you just can’t face making any more mud pies - that’s what we are here for!

Inside, there’s no shortage of things to keep everyone occupied either.

Outdoor Play in Scottish Weather

Come and Play, Whatever the Weather

A Stay & Play session at Dumbreck Outdoor Playbarn is designed for children aged 1-7.

Our sessions give little ones the freedom to explore, create, play and follow their own curiosity, whatever the Scottish weather has planned for us. Infact, it introduced a new idea of appreciation for the natural world around us.

Childhood should have plenty of room for muddy adventures, their big imaginations and days spent outside.
